The Hot Weather's Here, and The Fish Love It!

Capt. Sal Tardella
July 7, 2009
Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

We had a day off on Monday, but Tuesday morning we sailed with brothers, Mike and Jim McManus from North Salem NY. We started off around the Norwalk Islands and found bluefish hitting sand eels on the surface and had an hour and a half with top-water action, landing blues 4-6 pounds. We then moved easterly and worked around Southport and found bass on top, and the McManus boys brought in several schoolies up to 24″.

On Sunday we left the dock around 7:30 am with Ted Inglesias of Westport and his father-in-law, Art Miller of Brooklyn NY. They were together for their annual July 4th weekend in CT. The trip started off fairly slowly, so we made our way across Long Island Sound and found bluefish along the shore, providing non-stop action for about two hours.

We spent the morning of Independence Day on the water with Cliff Lamotta of Ridgefield and his 14-year-old son, Zack-–bringing in a keeper bass only 20 minutes after we left the dock; it weighed 14 pounds. Shortly thereafter we had some nice bluefish, with one coming in at nine pounds. We made our made eastward and found a large school of blues on the surface, and we stayed there for about two hours, pulling in bluefish as well as striped bass. All of the fish were released.

On Friday morning we had aboard Joel Berman of Wilton, and his grandchildren, 11-year-old Matthew, and Lucy and Zack, both 8 years old. Also with us was his son, Glen, visiting from Maryland. The family had a wonderful morning, bringing in close to a dozen striped bass–- including five keepers–-and some nice blues up to 8 lbs, ending the day with 3-pound porgy. All the fish were released except for the porgy.
