LOTS OF PORGIES; LARGER BLUEFISH, TOO....

Capt. Sal Tardella
August 11, 2011
Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

On Friday we sailed with Cliff Lamotta of Ridgefield, who brought along his two teenage sons–all good fishermen. The day's catch included a keeper bass, large blues up to ten pounds, and a mess of porgies

Saturday's trip was with Marc Cohen of Darien, who also brought along two teenage sons. Everyone had a great time jigging up bluefish up to seven pounds, after which we moved closer to shore, where they got into nice porgy action, along with schoolie bass. We ended the trip plugging up surface blues.

Sunday's trip was cancelled because of morning rains and the threat of a thunderstorm. But we had a double header on Monday, and the weather was very cooperative for both trips. The morning outing was with Steve Hadik of Woolwich, Maine, and his daughter, Rebecca, and his sister, Cathy. They got striped bass, porgies, and top-water bluefish, keeping several fillets for a family barbecue. In the early afternoon we had aboard a resident of Switzerland, Mark Pataky– in our area for a business trip and eager to try his luck fishing on Long Island Sound. Although an accomplished angler, Pataky had never experienced the fun of jigging, and he's never caught (or even seen) a porgy before. He enjoyed an exciting afternoon during which he brought in bluefish, porgies, and striped bass.

On Tuesday we went out at 7am with Richard Naum of Easton, who was entertaining his son, Jay, his daughter-in-law, and grandson–all residents of Sweden. The family had a good time catching bluefish on light jigs, and then–using tube and worm–they scored with schoolie bass and a 32″ keeper, finishing off the day with more bass and porgies.

On Wednesday we sailed with Jason Murphy of New Canaan and his teenaged son, Connor. Also aboard was Jason's brother, Sean–and his sons, Ryan, Brendan and Keane–all of whom live in San Francisco CA. It was a beautiful day, and everyone enjoyed non-stop action with porgies along local shores, and then large bluefish that were jigged up in the middle of the Sound.
