Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

We had a double-header on Wednesday. In the morning we sailed with Peter Horoszko and his daughter, Katya, of Darien–and his son, Jamie Horoszko of Newtown, along with Peter's parents, visiting from Ukraine–Lora and Vova Volkova, residents of Odessa. We did well–first catching some porgies around the Norwalk Islands–and then enjoying non-stop action at the Nissaquogue, catching bluefish and an occasional fluke-not to mention all the sea robins. Everyone had a great day.
Our afternoon fishermen were Miles Slater and his guest, Chris, a visitor from Frankfurt, Germany. After a slow start, we ran up to Southport, where we found bluefish on the surface. Everyone had fun bringing them in on bucktails-with seven short fluke as part of the catch. All the fish were released except for four blues, kept for dinner.
On Tuesday morning our passengers were Brian Swee and his son, Kyle, and Lou Gizzarelli and his son, L.J.–all from Newburgh NY. Although the youngsters (14 and 15 year olds) were hoping to catch (their first ever) bluefish, we spent the day mostly catching striped bass up to 25″, working throughout the Norwalk Islands–along with some nice porgies 11½-14″, with many throw-backs. Generally our clients are eager for stripers, and we have to be satisfied with a crop of bluefish. The fishing charter business sometimes presents strange scenarios. We rarely get skunked, but we can't guarantee a particular specie on a particular day; that only happens on a restaurant menu.
On Sunday afternoon we fished with Chris Grillo of New Canaan, his two sons–Alexander and Austin, 7 and 9– and his dad, George Grillo, from Massachusetts. We found bluefish almost immediately, and the family had a great experience plugging up blues 2-4 pounds.
