Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

It seems folks don't care too much about fishing once Labor Day comes and goes. And the weather hasn't been too cooperative over the past ten days either.
But we sailed on Saturday morning, Sept 10, with My Bonnie regular, Frank Chieffalo of Danbury and his son, Frank Jr., along with their guests, Clark Winchell and his daughter, Katelyn. We made our way into the middle of the Sound, hoping to do some jigging, but the action was very disappointing, so we moved to the shoreline and found a large school of porgies, with the fish ranging 12-16″. We then made our way westward, and blind-casting along the shore we found a school of feisty blues, and everyone had tight lines, bringing in the fish on light tackle and surface plugs.
Then we had to cancel two trips during the week because of foul weather. We were able to get out on Sept 17, and we sailed with Jay Cook of Darien, who brought along three fishing buddies. It was a tough day–-low temperatures and winds out of the northeast 15-20, with gusts up to 25. When we left the thermometer read 51 degrees, with the wind-chill factor making it feel like a winter's day. We had to stay inshore because of the wind, but we boated more than ten fish including porgies, bluefish and bass, all of which were released. The fish were happy, and so were the fishermen, including captain and mate, when we got back to the marina.
Sunday's weather was a carbon copy of Saturday's, but the winds were a bit higher. We were out with Peter Levy, his son, Ricky, and Ricky's friends, Colin Duncan and Rick Burke–all from Greenwich. Again staying close to the shoreline, we were able to bring in half a dozen striped bass, after which we loaded up on porgies with some bluefish thrown in. Considering the adverse conditions, we did quite well. The boys, all 11 years old, really enjoyed the rockin' and rollin' of the waves. I wish I could say the same for myself….
On Thursday we left the dock at 7:00am with Marc Pfefferle of White Plains, who brought along Scott, Larry, and another Larry, who are Pfefferle's business associates. All of the men were good anglers, and we had a successful day bringing in bluefish 3-5 pounds (mostly blindcasting) as well as schoolie bass and lots of large porgies averaging 14-16".
