Post-Labor Day Slowdown Has Begun....

Capt. Sal Tardella

Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

We were busy with daily trips including some double headers through Labor Day, but the demand for charters has slowed down very quickly as families got back to business at summer's end.

We did have two trips last weekend. Saturday's charter was briefer than expected, with Mother Nature calling the shots. We left the dock at 8am with New York City residents, Thomas Triplett and his son, Nicholas, and Gordon Kaplan and his son, Jack; both boys are four years old and had never fished before. At our first stop they reeled in porgies and sea bass, after which we changed tactics in pursuit of bluefish, heading outside the Norwalk Islands. Unfortunately, the waters were a bit rough, and both of the boys and one of the fathers became seasick, so we had to cut the trip short and return to our dock before their symptoms worsened. They were happy to get their feet back on dry land, and everyone agreed that, all in all, the experience was a happy one, and they wanted to return to try again on a calmer day.

On Sunday our passengers were Dave Stueber of Bedford NY and his 13-year-old son, Andrew. Within 15 minutes of leaving the dock we were into bluefish, blind-casting lures on the surface, with the fish ranging from 3-5 pounds. We moved further along the shoreline and found another body of smaller blues and large porgies. The Stuebers enjoyed non-stop action throughout the trip, boating 25 fish, keeping five blues and three porgies for the dinner table.
