Report for Long Island Sound

Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

July 7, 2003

For her first trip aboard "My Bonnie," Melissa Paul brought along her husband and two other principals of her Milford catering business. The party had a wonderful morning fishing for blues on the surface (2-4 pound range) and fluke (five keepers 18-21") plus a nice mess of porgies.

Alan & Bobbie Gottlieb of Rye, NY returned for their annual trip aboard "My Bonnie." This year they hosted their son-in-law and granddaughter, residents of Washington, D.C. It was a hot, sunny day, and the fishing was great. The family had their first experience pulling in bluefish using light tackle. They also got fluke, with the largest of three keepers coming in at 25". Very exciting for all the generations aboard. The day was completed with a catch of porgies caught off the golf course on the Long Island side.

Tom Vincenti of Westport and two friends, Scott and Kevin, had an afternoon trip on Sunday. We fished Cold Spring Harbor and found bluefish finning on the surface. The boys had a ball, with fish ranging from 3-5 pounds. They also had some keeper fluke to take home to their families.

Something a little bit different this week....Kraig Anderson and his friend, Marilyn, visiting from San Diego, CA, and here for the sole purpose of photographing lighthouses in New York and Connecticut, sailed aboard "My Bonnie" on Monday morning. They're lighthouse enthusiasts and experts in lighthouse lore, and they were delighted with Green's Ledge, Peck's Ledge, Stamford Light and Great Captain's Island Lighthouse in Greenwich. The beaconologists finishing their tour with a visit to Sheffield Island Light right before they hustled back to New York for their flight home to San Diego.

We're starting to see some bait on the Norwalk side, with blues occasionally coming up at Middle Passage. Timing is the key; if you're there at the right time you can finally catch blues 4-6 pounds closer to home, and we expect that local fishing will only improve from here on in.
