Report for Long Island Sound

Capt. Sal Tardella
August 24, 2003
Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Ed Stout of Texas, visiting his daughter in Darien, hooked up with another buddy, and they both fished for the first time on Long Island Sound. In Middle Passage we found a nice school of blues, and they brought in a dozen on Crippled Herring lures.

Virginia Kamsky of New York City and Wilson Point took her young son Michael out twice this week with some friends. On the first trip early in the week--an afternoon--the action was disappointing, only yielding a few blues and porgies. But on Sunday morning the situation was totally different. The party of three took home five fluke 18-21", two keeper sea bass, 11 porgies and 10 bluefish--all to be used that evening for a big party to entertain a Chinese ambassador.

Martin Beck of Wilton and two of his friends had a good morning catching bluefish on the surface off of Green's Ledge Light and porgies in 30 feet of water.

Rick Martino of West Haven brought his girlfriend, Tina, out for a day aboard "My Bonnie." After a slow start we found blues a mile off Cockenoe--acres of them on top. The twosome had a great time, boating more than 30 in the 4-6 pound range, keeping ten for the table and to share with friends.

In the middle of the week Dr. Lawrence Schneider, an ENT specialist from Old Greenwich, brought along his New Jersey friend, Jeff, for their first excursion with us. They had a spectacular morning chasing bluefish off of Sheffield Island, after which we had good porgy fishing, with a nice keeper fluke thrown in to keep things interesting.

Joe and Joan Truckler of Mt. Kisco and their two sons had a tough morning, losing most of the blues around the boat. We then moved closer to shore and caught lots of porgies and fluke.

The bluefishing has been on and off, but when you find them, their numbers are staggering. There's still a tremendous amount of bait everywhere. It should be a memorable autumn for all the local anglers this year.
