Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

It was another week of foggy mornings, wet decks, bumpy waters, and cold temperature, but we had a few days of good fishing in spite of it all.
David Bellner from Stamford, a first-timer aboard “My Bonnie”--and three buddies--had fun with schoolie bass caught off of Sunken Island, using dark-toned Sparkling Beetles and blue-backed Rattle Traps, with largest fish measuring 27”.
With Carl DelRoy of Putnam County, and two of his friends, we worked around Smith’s Reef, and everyone brought in bass and blues, using top-water plugs.
Water temps on Friday were still below 60 degrees. We cancelled our Sunday trip because of the early-morning winds.
There’s word of large bass coming in at up to 30 pounds in Hempstead Harbor and at Buoy 40. Most are being brought in during night trips. Fluke are being caught at Sunken Meadow and at Lloyd’s Neck. Large porgies are also being caught, but they can’t be kept until July 23.
