Report for Long Island Sound

Capt. Sal Tardella
May 24, 2005
Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

The water temperatures are still only running from 55-58 degrees with some even colder temps, depending on what time we sail. It’s been as low as 54° some mornings when we leave the dock at 6:30. But the action finally began to pick up this week.

We had a good day with Bud Barton of Greenwich, who brought along a local fishing buddy for their very first trip aboard “My Bonnie.” We tooled around the Norwalk Islands, using bucktail with Mr. Twister, and did very well with schoolie bass, tallying more than a dozen up to 24”.

Dave Van Deventer of Norwalk hosted some visiting family members for their first excursion on the Sound. We headed eastward toward Westport and worked tightly off of Frost Point, where a pocket of school bass were lying close to shore. Everybody got into the action, totaling a catch of 18 stripers, all hooked with small Creek Chubs and bucktails with chartreuse Mr. Twisters.

Tom Rinaldi and his son, Tom, Jr., and brother Rick and his son, Paul—all of Pennsylvania—scored big, fishing off the reef at Cockenoe. They tallied 28 bass 16-23”, with one keeper coming in at 30”. This was also their first trip with us, and they’re coming back in July for the bluefish run.

Ron Shannon of Stamford entertained Steve Barthel and his sons, Ryan and Bryan—visiting from Michigan to help celebrate a family member’s graduation. We traveled around Fish Island and west to Smith’s Reef. They had a super day, with bass caught on poppers and bucktail, all in the schoolie range. It was great fun for the Barthels, who’ve never fished in salt water nor ever caught a striped bass.

The season is still a few weeks late in getting into full mode because of the cold winter and spring. In previous years we’ve gotten bluefish as early as May 7, but so far this spring we haven’t caught any in our local haunts. The blues are definitely east of us and west of us (in Bridgeport Harbor as well as in City Island and Rye NY), and when temps reach normal readings, the blues should start to show up in numbers right here in the Norwalk Islands and Westport—which will be a welcome sight for most the local anglers.

I hope everyone has a great Memorial Weekend!
