Report for Long Island Sound

Capt. Sal Tardella
June 28, 2005
Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Marty Nachemson of Wilton and his party fished around Sprite Island and Westport, doing well with school-sized striped bass caught on poppers and bucktails. This was their maiden voyage with us.

Mark Esposito of Greenwich and his son brought along another father and son for an afternoon trip; fishing was on the slow side, but we managed to bring in a 27-inch striper and blues in the 2-3 pound class.

Ted Ingles Westport and New York City brought along his dad for a return trip aboard "My Bonnie". We tried for fluke on the other side of the Sound, and they were successful, bringing in fish up to 20". We also caught bluefish on Creek Chub plugs.

Michael Cohen brought along his son and a business colleague with his son, as well. We fished the Cows off Stamford in pursuit of large bass, but we only managed to bring in two stripers 25-26" and some blues. Happily, however, the boys brought in some large porgies--our first of the '05 season. All the scup had to be released, because their season doesn't open until July 1.

Jim Brackenridge of Westport and his two sons, Andrew and Nicholas--and their grandpa, Nick, visiting from St. Louis--celebrated Andrew's third birthday with a wonderful fishing trip. We found bluefish in mid-Sound, working the weed line, and everyone reeled in fish in the 3-5 pound range.

Jim Tierney of New Canaan brought along his two sons, Jack and Alex, and two of their teachers from the West School in New Canaan--Jeremy Cross and Patrick Murren. The group caught nine striped bass, including seven keepers--as well as two 8-lb. bluefish --all on bunker chunks. The trip included the additional adventure of making our way through Monday morning's dense fog.

Chris Meyer of Cincinnati, Ohio, visiting Stamford for a few days, took his two sons and two other relatives out for an afternoon trip that began with a slow pick in light rain and fog--and temperatures that had dipped about 20 degrees from the morning thermometer readings. We did manage to bring in a few blues and one keeper bass. Everybody was wet and cold, but satisfied with the day's catch.

Fishing has finally picked up, with many blues in the middle of the Sound and on the Long Island side. Nice-sized porgies are showing up in good numbers, and the striped bass fishing is quite consistent, with keepers no longer a rarity.
