Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Dennis Keum of Golden’s Bridge, NY, brought along his parents, who reside in Hartsdale, for an early morning trip, the family’s very first fishing excursion on Long Island Sound. We stayed in deep water, using bunker chunks, and everyone caught striped bass and bluefish—six stripers up to 24 pounds and seven blues up to 10 pounds. The Keums are Asian and planned to use their day’s catch for a sushi dinner. On the way back to our dock they had a chance to witness the spectacle of a bluefish attacking a hapless bunker I was snagging for the next day’s charter—another first for Dennis and his mom and dad. All in all, it was a perfect initial L.I. Sound fishing experience for the Keums, and they vowed to come back to try it again very soon.
Sallie Briggs of New Canaan and her brother, Peter, visiting from Pennsylvania, brought along their friend, Nancy. We found a school of bunker off of Green’s Ledge Light, where we landed a bluefish weighing 11 pounds. Then when fishing in deeper water off of the lighthouse—using bunker chunks—they brought in four bass, including two keepers--15 and 18 pounds--plus a nice passel of blues.
Paul DiCesare of Irvington, NY, brought along his three sons and their grandfather, Dominick, a resident of Dobbs Ferry. Using chunks, everyone reeled in blues up to ten pounds--plus some smaller ones caught on poppers. Paul also caught a nice 25-inch striped bass while we were plugging on the Long Island side of the Sound.
Joe Gomes of Bridgeport and two friends—all on their first trip with us—started out at Green’s Ledge, where the pickings were a bit slow, with just a few blues hitting our lines. We then moved along the Darien shoreline, and the boys had a great time reeling in two keeper stripers, 31 and 34 inches, which they planned to use at their July 4th barbecue. The bass were caught on bunker chunks.
Bill Carey and his two sons, and his son-in-law, and another friend—all of Fairfield—had a great trip, a bon voyage event for the two younger Careys, who are moving to Texas on a business venture. Considering the heavy boat traffic, a strong northeast wind, and a dead-low tide, we were quite successful, with 12 bass, two large porgies, and two blackfish while working around the Norwalk Islands. The porgies will be on the menu for the farewell party barbecue, but all the bass and blackfish were released.
Norwalkers, Bucky and Fran Taylor and their 6-year old daughter, fished with us on Independence Day, bringing along the Malatest family visiting from Wisconsin. The party caught 11 striped bass including one 14 pounder, a four-pound blackfish and a few blues.
It was a great July 4th weekend, and the local fireworks display was spectacular, too!
