Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

On Thursday morning Gary Latrelle, a golf course superintendent from upstate New York, brought along his teen-aged son and friend, Robin—for his third trip aboard “My Bonnie.” We fought a chop of 3-4 feet for most of the morning, but their perseverance paid off, as the threesome caught bluefish up to 10 pounds and a nice keeper striped bass. Many more fish were lost at the boat because of the bumpy conditions and the anglers’ problems with standing upright in the swells.
Susan Silas, a Location Scout for a new Robert DeNiro film, “The Good Shepherd”, was our sole afternoon passenger. We took her to Wilson Point, Rowayton, Darien, Westport and Southport in search of a suitable clapboard house on the shore to be the site for several scenes in the film, whose production is set to begin this August. She spotted the ideal home on the Five-Mile River and will be following up on its availability.
Friday’s trip was a lulu. Defying the bad weather forecasts, Doug DeBarger of Weston brought his two sons and their grandfather to fish on a very windy and rainy morning—enduring the fringe effects of tropical storm Cindy. They were a stalwart fishing party, however, and plugged up some bass and blues—all caught inside the Norwalk Islands, since we couldn’t make our way into open water due to the high seas.
Last weekend we took out Neil O’Shea, his son and grandson of Rowayton and their friend, Dom of New Jersey. They caught six bass up to 27” and five blues off Green’s Ledge Light. They also dropped a keeper fluke right at the boat.
Jeff Boxer of Norwalk—a former member of the U.S. Coast Guard--brought along his son and another father and son for their first trip with us. Everyone caught porgies, blues and bass, with Jeff bringing in a keeper striper.
Doug Rodda of Darien, a wholesale meat supplier out of Manhattan, entertained country club chefs and other personnel from the Apawamis, Rolling Hills and Orienta Beach Clubs. Everyone caught striped bass—more than 18—and a nice by-catch of fluke up to 21” plus a smattering of bluefish in the 3-5 pound class.
