Report for Long Island Sound

Capt. Sal Tardella
August 23, 2005
Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Todd Phillips of Stamford brought along two friends for their first trip with us. We fished the Norwalk Islands and Westport, and they had a good morning catching striped bass up to 25”; all the fish were caught on bucktails.

Rick Bradt returned for his second corporate outing of the season. We picked him and his colleagues up in Greenwich Harbor, and quickly found hordes of bluefish attacking peanut bunker schools, providing nonstop action for the entire trip.

Delaware residents, Richard Wood and his son, Richard Jr., had a nice catch of bass at Cockenoe, Westport and the Saugatuck River.

Jim McMahon of Ridgefield returned for his second trip this year. He brought along his wife, Liz, and his parents—visiting from Georgia. The winds were high and the waters were quite sloppy--so we had to hug the shoreline to ward off some impending seasickness, but the stalwart party caught more than a dozen bass using bucktails and worms as we fished around structures.

Mark Toner of Norwalk treated his young children, Ryan and Jill, to the family’s first fishing trip ever. They hauled in stripers up to 26”, and everyone was thrilled with their maiden voyage.

Peggy Eisen of Darien brought along two friends at the end of last week, and we had to deal with a lot of weekend boat traffic. They had some fun with bluefish, catching them on the surface with poppers. They also managed to bring in some nice school bass, but one keeper was lost close to the boat.

Octogenarian Murray Verlin of Stamford joined us for the first time ever. He’s a good fisherman and had a great time fishing for striped bass around the Norwalk Islands, catching four using bucktails. When we found a school of blues off of Cockenoe, he plugged up several in the 2-4 pound class.
