Report for Long Island Sound

Capt. Sal Tardella
June 18, 2006
Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

It looks like the bite is finally on!

After four straight days of fishing we had a day off on Monday, but we set out very early on Tuesday morning with a party of four that included Vic Tara and three colleagues from Paragon Athletics of NYC. The half-day charter was extended to six hours because we couldn't curb anyone's enthusiasm. The group brought in scads of fish, chunking up some nice bass up to 14 pounds off of Green's Ledge Light and then using Creek Chub poppers to bring in a humungous passel of bluefish that were finning on the surface off of Sunken Meadow on the other side of the Sound.

On Thursday we went out with Frank Egan, Peter Holland and Dan Bernstein. It was a great morning, with 29 striped bass up to 25", caught on bucktail and on fly rods--mostly off Cockenoe and Westport.

Friday morning's trip included Jeff Mamera of Westport and Jamie Mamera of NYC, taking out their pop, George Mamera, visiting from the Keystone State for Father's Day. After a fairly-slow start we moved to the other side of the Sound and kept everyone busy reeling in bluefish up to 7 pounds. The action was nonstop, with all fish caught on the surface.

In the afternoon we had Michael Grey of Norwalk's Canfield Island, treating friend and birthday boy, Larry Goichman of Stamford. They boated 22 bass, including one keeper at 29", throughout the Westport shoreline. All the fish were caught on bucktail lures.

Saturday morning's trip was a family outing for Dr. Donna Coletti and her husband, Nevio Murcjacie of Greenwich--and their son and daughter, Ralph and Laura. We caught schoolie bass around Copp's Island, and when we moved to midSound, they plugged up bluefish 3-6 pounds, using topwater lures. This was the first fishing experience for Nevio and the children, and they were thrilled with their catch.

Father's Day was busy on the Sound. We had a double header, starting with a late-morning trip for John Moon and his wife and two children; the Moons live in NYC and spend the summers in Westport. The family had a wonderful day catching a boatload of blues and striped bass, all on surface plugs.

In the afternoon Tomas Kalkys and Denis Litvenko of Vernon CT and Linartas Bitinas of New Britain pulled in two striped bass 24" and 25" and 15 bluefish, ending a long week of heavy fishing for "My Bonnie".
