Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

82-year old Bud Wehrle of Las Vegas NV was in Norwalk for his annual trip—visiting with his sister who lives in Rowayton. On Wednesday the octogenarian had a good morning, bringing in more than a dozen striped bass—23-27”—off of Westport. All of the fish were caught on bucktail lures.
On Friday afternoon we sailed with Jim Grandolfio of Rye and his wife and son, Jim Jr. They had great fun with schoolie bass up to 26”, after which we found huge porgies around Goose Island—with the largest measuring a mammoth 16”.
Saturday’s trip was with three relative novices--Howie Lunn of Ridgefield, and two friends from Chicago. They had a great time—with non-stop action, hauling in large bluefish under bunker schools off of Cockenoe, then finishing off the trip with eight striped bass and porgies.
Bud Wehrle sailed with us again on Sunday morning and got more than 15 nice bluefish as well as a keeper striped bass while diamond-jigging mid-Sound.
Sunday afternoon’s trip included a family of “My Bonnie” first-timers—Roger Muchnick of Westport, and his children—Roger Jr., Grace, Avery, and Will. They started out pulling in bluefish off of Copp’s. Within five minutes they had a 9-pounder aboard plus striped bass up to 25”. At the same spot they brought in porgies up to 15”. When we moved inside just off of Cockenoe we found more school bass—and we ended our trip at Goose Island where we found blues on the surface and caught many on top-water lures. As a by-catch, one of the youngsters hauled in a very respectable fluke, as well.
Monday morning’s weather was perfect, but the fishing was so-so. Bud Wehrle was aboard for his third and final trip this season, and he jigged up blues 7-9 pounds at 28C. When we moved inshore in search of striped bass, he caught four schoolies on worms.
In the afternoon Pete Esposito of Norwalk brought along his 14-year-old son, Nick, and Nick’s friend, Luke. They all enjoyed the trip, bringing in bluefish up to 9 pounds and almost a dozen stripers as well as a mess of porgies.
