Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Almost all of last week’s trips were cancelled due to the gale-force winds and heaving seas. However, Murray Verlin and Coleen McCourtney of Stamford and NYC came out with us on Friday morning; the waters were far from calm, but the couple—both good sports and excellent fishermen—had a fine time with lots of blues and tons of porgies plus a few stripers. I brought home a small bluefish for our dinner that evening, and Bonnie baked the fillets in a creative mushroom/mustard/mayonnaise sauce. Very tasty.
On Saturday morning, despite the vilest of weather conditions, we kept a promise to scatter ashes at sea for a local family whose father’s will included the desire to have a fishing boat used for the ceremony. It was a loving and reverent service— but probably the shortest on record, and everyone was very relieved to return safely to our marina.
All the local boat owners had a harrowing Saturday night and Sunday morning, worrying about whether or not their craft would be affected by the high winds that descended upon Norwalk for two thirds of the Labor Day weekend. “My Bonnie” sustained no damage, for which I am most grateful, and we were able to take a last-minute charter on Sunday afternoon—with Dominick Prisco of Stamford and his cousin, Anthony Violante of Linden, New Jersey. They were both seasoned fishermen, but there were only a few bluefish and striped bass in the boat after more than four hours of pulling out all the tricks in our arsenal. Obviously, the Sound takes a little time to get back into balance after its own seasickness. Although the rocking and rolling was relatively minimal that morning, the water was a chocolate color—and filled with debris and flotsam of all description—not too appetizing for the fish somewhere below, who were apparently off their feed.
On Monday (Labor Day) morning we actually had to wear sunglasses as we fished with Scott & Stephanie Friedman and Brian Jasorkowski of Stamford. Although the day was beautiful, the trio had a slow start working around the Norwalk Islands, but they ended the trip with one bluefish and 29 striped bass up to 27”, all caught on bucktails.
In the afternoon we sailed with Christine Breck and Sean Hanna of the Lone Star State. They reeled in large bluefish up to 13 lbs., as well as one striper and a fluke, using Bomber swimmers. All the fish were released, except for a few blues that were kept for a holiday barbecue on Bell Island.
