Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

On Friday my sometimes mate, Emilio Pandolfi of Danbury, and I went out at 4:00am to find some bunker. Of course, we didn't stop when our cooler was full; we had to see what was happening with the stripers. Our instincts were right; we found the perfect spot, used the perfect bait, and got a perfect catch--15 fish, with four keepers up to 33". All of the fish released so I could count on them being there for my customers!
Saturday morning we left the dock at 6:00am and headed into the middle of the Sound. Aboard Carl Carrenti of Shelton--one of our regulars; he brought along co-workers from O.C.E. Imagistics: Tony Orsini, Len Wolak, and Jamie Petrocelli. It was a wonderful day, with the boys bringing in 18 bass up to 36" plus two large porgies that came in at the end of the trip.
Last week's final trip was on Sunday morning, with Paul Stokes of North Carolina, who brought along his father, Lawrence Stokes--visiting from London, England--and friends, Tim Grace of Greenwich, and Rob Underwood of Harrison NY. The foursome had a wonderful day, bringing in a few nice stripers 24-27", caught on bunker chunks, as well as about 30 blues on the Long Island side--all on chrome Creek Chub lures. The fish were hitting nonstop, and everyone was arm weary as they walked up the ramp towards their car. It's funny...so many of my first-time prospective customers insist they want more than a half-day charter (four hours), but most anglers poop out after three hours of fast action, especially when we get into summer weather.
We started off this week with another great trip. Jim McMahon of Ridgefield took out his father, Jim McMahon Sr. of Jackson GA, and his father-in-law, Jim Kirby of White Stone VA. We left the dock and immediately headed toward the middle of the Sound to catch the morning tide. Within 15 minutes we began pulling striped bass, totaling more than two dozen that included four keepers. At the same spot the three Jims pulled in some bluefish up to six pounds (those that didn't break off because we weren't using any leader in our pursuit of stripers.) The weather was perfect, and the three fishermen were very happy. The keeper bass will be part of a graduation dinner in honor of Jim McMahon III, who's heading off to Duke University in the fall.
