Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Friday morning's trip was with Mitch Kreuch of Darien and three of his business colleagues. Winds were high, but so were their spirits--after catching seven striped bass, including one keeper--off of Green's Ledge Light.
In the afternoon that same day we had Lee Mitchell of Darien and his friend, Fred Sutton of Ruston, LA. The seas were even rougher than they were in the morning, but the boys limited out on keeper bass (with a total of stripers), some bluefish up to 8 pounds and a jumbo porgy measuring 18".
On Saturday morning we sailed with Murray Verlin again; this time he brought along a business associate, visiting from Italy. The winds were still with us, but we got a nice catch of porgies in the middle of the Sound.
Sunday's trip was with Jim Preston of Westport and Vero Beach FL. Jim was entertaining his teen-age grandson, P.J., who was visiting from California. Early in the trip the youngster caught his first striped bass ever--using a sandworm--and grandpa bagged a 30-inch keeper later on. All told, they got a dozen stripers.
Monday's weather was gale-like, but Dennis Carson of Clear Lake, Minnesota, was not deterred in any way. He was visiting his family in Norwalk--along with another grandson, 11-year old Skyler Rickertson of Amery WI, who's been dreaming about catching a large saltwater fish--of any species. The Norwalk contingent included son-in-law, John Albrecht, Dean of Students and athletic coach of Norwalk High School, his wife, Danielle--a Stamford attorney--and their children, 7-year old Jonathan and 3-year-old Tessa. Everyone was swathed in warm clothing and foul-weather gear as we headed out upon rough seas at 7:00am, and then the rain began to fall. The stalwart group managed to fish for the full four-hour trip, bearing up quite well under the unpleasant weather conditions, and for their tenacity they were rewarded with some striped bass, one large blue, about ten pounds(caught by Skyler, making his dreams come true!) and some porgies, too...but we couldn't stay in that location due to the acceleration of the NE winds. All of us were soaking wet, but many memories were made that morning.
On Tuesday the weather was fair and, unfortunately, so was the fishing. Aboard "My Bonnie" were locals, Craig Steinberg and his son and daughter. Not surprisingly, Monday's all-day blow negatively affected the fishing conditions (and may continue to do so for a couple more days), but we did manage to catch some bluefish and striped bass.
