Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

On Wednesday we had aboard William Banks of Darien and his grandson, Jack McEwan of Durham NC. It was a wonderful day of fishing, with blues up to 13 pounds, as well as one striper measuring 26", caught on jigs. When we moved to the middle of the Sound, we plugged up a different body of 4-6 pound blues very close to the surface.
Thursday morning we had two anglers with us who were back after a trip the previous week. Jim Winters of Norwalk and his father-in-law, Peter Burster of Port St. Lucie, FL, got large bluefish up to 11 pounds and a 17.5 pound striped bass--all caught on sandworms. We saw a school of false albacore while we were fishing in deep water, but they were too elusive for my passengers.
We ended the week on Sunday, with Brookfield residents, Gary Gaudioso, his brother, Gig, and his son, Mark--all first timers with "My Bonnie". We began the morning plugging up bluefish on the surface two miles off Copp's, after which we moved closer to shore, where we found schoolie bass and some large blues up to nine pounds. The group also caught some nice porgies up to 17".
Monday we sailed with Lee Mitchell of Darien and his father-in-law, visiting from the Lone Star State. Bass up to 27.5" came in and some slammer blues, after which we found a body of smaller blues off of Westport feeding on the surface, and the action thereafter was nonstop.
Tuesday morning's trip was with Steve Roberts and his 10-year-old a son, Ben--along with Doug Slater of New Rochelle. After a slow start we found nice-sized bluefish up to 10 pounds and tallied 11, mixed in with some stripers. Young Ben is a great angler, and he kept up with dad and Slater; his only complaint at the end of the trip was that he was arm weary from all that heavy-duty reeling.
