Report for Long Island Sound

Capt. Sal Tardella
August 19, 2007
Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Monday we sailed with Lee Mitchell of Darien and his father-in-law, visiting from the Lone Star State. Bass up to 27.5" came in and some slammer blues, after which we found a body of smaller blues off of Westport feeding on the surface, and the action thereafter was nonstop.

Tuesday morning's trip was with Steve Roberts and his 10-year-old a son, Ben--along with Doug Slater of New Rochelle. After a slow start we found nice-sized bluefish up to 10 pounds and tallied 11, mixed in with some stripers. Young Ben is a great angler, and he kept up with dad and Slater; his only complaint at the end of the trip was that he was arm weary from all that heavy-duty reeling.

On Wednesday we had our regular, Murray Verlin of NYC and Stamford, aboard--along with his chauffeur, Donnie. They had fun pulling in porgies nonstop, with about 10 keepers in the lot. We then hunted down bluefish and found a nice body in Westport, with the blues coming in at 7-10 pounds--many of which were kept for an evening barbecue.

Thursday was a banner day--perfect weather and great fishing. Joe Walsh and his son, Joel, of Norwalk enjoyed bringing in blues off of Goose Island--using Creek Chub and Gag Grabber plugs. The fish weighed 8-10 pounds. The Walshes also got into some porgies up to 16".

On Friday morning Bill Bendix of Norwalk brought his two sons, Alex and Tucker, for their first trip with us. Although they often fish aboard their own boat, this was the boys' first experience catching striped bass. The boys tallied about a dozen, using sandworms and bucktail lures. We saw some bluefish during the trip, but they wanted to concentrate their efforts on the erstwhile-elusive stripers.

Sunday's trip was with another newcomer...Steven Umlauf of Greenwich and his young son, Steven Jr. Although there was a lot of afternoon boat traffic, we managed a nice catch of schoolie stripers and a mess of porgies up to 15".
