Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

On Friday morning Bill Bendix of Norwalk brought his two sons, Alex and Tucker, for their first trip with us. Although they often fish aboard their own boat, this was the boys' first experience catching striped bass. The boys tallied about a dozen, using sandworms and bucktail lures. We saw some bluefish during the trip, but they wanted to concentrate their efforts on the erstwhile-elusive stripers.
Sunday's trip was with another newcomer...Steven Umlauf of Greenwich and his young son, Steven Jr. Although there was a lot of afternoon boat traffic, we managed a nice catch of schoolie stripers and a mess of porgies up to 15".
Bad weather kept us on dry land Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Thursday we sailed with Dr. Larry Fliegelman of Weston, Andy Kail of Westport and Jeff Kahn of Ridgewood NJ. We started out working around the Norwalk Islands, where we picked up some schoolie stripers on sandworms. When we moved eastward toward Westport, we found a school of large bluefish working the surface. Using poppers, they caught nine--weighing 6-9 pounds--and took home five for the dinner table.
