Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Thursday we sailed with Dr. Larry Fliegelman of Weston, Andy Kail of Westport and Jeff Kahn of Ridgewood NJ. We started out working around the Norwalk Islands, where we picked up some shoolie stripers on sandworms. When we moved eastward toward Westport, we found a school of large bluefish working the surface. Using poppers, they caught nine--weighing 6-9 pounds--and took home five for the dinner table.
Friday's weather was picture perfect. In the morning we had aboard Mitch Kreuch of Darien and his friends, Chris Karl of Darien and Lee Brown of Bedford NY. We began blind-casting around the Norwalk Islands and the trio plugged up blues 5-6 pounds, after which we moved to Cockenoe, where we found the blues on the surface--providing non-stop action for everyone.
The afternoon trip was with Shel Wappler of Norwalk and two of his young children, Ivy and Will. The family had a great time, catching blues on the surface in the middle of the Sound. It was a first-time-ever experience for the kids, reeling in bluefish 5-9 pounds.
Saturday's charter took place during the Long Island Sound Bluefish Contest, and there was a lot of boat traffic everywhere. But David Sarda of Greenwich and his two sons, as well as a Swedish visitor, Jan, enjoyed great topwater action almost immediately after we left the dock. The blues were on the surface off of Sheffield Island, and we followed the schools all the way to the middle of the Sound. They boated more than 40, keeping four for their evening barbecue.
