Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

Saturday's charter took place during the Long Island Sound Bluefish Contest, and there was a lot of boat traffic everywhere. But David Sarda of Greenwich and his two sons, as well as a Swedish visitor, Jan, enjoyed great top-water action almost immediately after we left the dock. The blues were on the surface off of Sheffield Island, and we followed the schools all the way to the middle of the Sound. They boated more than 40, keeping four for their evening barbecue.
Sunday morning we sailed with David Schaefer, Tom Holleman, Mike Miller, and Pat Chapman--all of Westport. We started out catching some bluefish while blindcasting. Then we changed strategy and went after porgies, catching 40--among which were 18 keepers. We moved further inshore--close to Westport--where we boated 8 striped bass, with the largest coming in at 19.4 pounds.
In the afternoon we had Jim Smith of Stamford, along with his sons, Sawyer and Lucas--and their friend, Sean Riley of Ridgefield. We quickly found bluefish finning off of Cockenoe Shoals, and everyone had fun reeling them in with surface poppers. They wanted to catch some porgies for dinner, so we moved closer to Westport, where they boated more than 30, keeping eight for their dinner; the scup averaged 12-14". We ended the day with a stop at Sheffield Island, catching more blues on top--all of which were released except for five.
Monday and Tuesday were days off for us, but on Wednesday we sailed with father and son, Carl and Mark Bildner. The action was so-so, but we got some nice blues on the surface as well as stripers up to 26" inside the Islands.
Thursday's trip was much more dramatic. Joe Walsh of Ridgefield, along with buddies Bruno and Jerry, enjoyed a morning of excitement, bringing in blues up to 10 pounds, a lot of keeper porgies, and a few schoolie bass. Some blues and porgies were taken home for a post-golf tournament barbecue.
