The season is definitely waning...

Capt. Sal Tardella

Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

On Columbus Day the weather was again perfect, and we had Mike Moriarty and Mike Jr. from Kent. We had a great day starting at 7:30 in the middle of the Sound, jigging bluefish until 10am, after which we went looking for porgies inshore, where the action continued with scup coming in 14-15″. Both father and son agreed that they enjoyed bringing in the feisty porgies more than the blues. They took home eight bluefish and ten porgies for the table; all the other fish were released.

This was the first trip aboard My Bonnie for Michael and Mike, and now they plan to make it an annual tradition.

On October 18 we had an afternoon gig with My Bonnie regular, Robert Remin of White Plains and his son, Daniel of West Hartford. The blackfishing was disappointing, but they got into large porgies and several bluefish, jigging mid-Sound.

It's been cold and windy for several days, but we went out on Friday morning, the 21st, with Roger Eustance of Wilton and two business colleagues. Dealing with winds gusting up to 30mph, we managed to bring in half a dozen schoolie bass, which our anglers considered a good catch under these challenging conditions.

We went out again early Saturday morning, with similar conditions but with winds a bit quieter than Friday, but again allowing little opportunity to get to our regular fishing haunts. Ilei Temel of Norwalk and his brother , Melih, visiting from Schaumburg, Illinois, were also subjected to cold and wind, but they were good sports and brought in many porgies–all keepers–and blackfish up to 17″. A family barbecue was planned for the evening.

The winds finally died down on Sunday, and we went out at 7:30am with Mark Bernier of Fairfield, along with his brother, Phil, and Phil's teenaged son, Cole, visiting from the Poconos. We started out fishing for porgies, and everyone enjoyed constant action bringing in a load of keepers. We then moved toward the middle of L.I. Sound, where our Lowrance marked solid groupings of fish down deep under hundreds of hovering birds and scores of hovering fishing boats. It was quite a zoo. We tried jigging and squidding with diamond jigs, with moderate success. The blues were there in great numbers, but, for the most part, they weren't interested in what we threw at them. The boys had a great day, however, especially since this was their first jigging experience.

As we write this the temps are down to the low 40's, with some forecasts indicating the possibility of snowfall in the next few days.
We plan to pull the boat out of the water on November 12, and we're not expecting much action before then.
