Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report
Our Sunday morning passengers were Matias Ortuno of Wilton–a native of Argentina—entertaining three guests from Morocco: brothers, Thami and Simo Alami, and their friend, Abde Abou. We began the day at 10am catching porgies up to 14″; then we moved eastward and marked some bait in deep water. I instructed the four anglers to blind cast in a specified direction, and everyone brought in bluefish for about 25 minutes. Continuing on an easterly path we found a large school of blues on the surface-along with some short fluke. The trip ended with a catch of schoolie bass up to 25″.
The weather on Saturday was perfect, and we left the dock at 7:00am with Bob Long of Danbury and his daughter, Jen–an avid fisherwoman, soon to be a bride. We began with a catch of striped bass up to 26″, after which we moved to Sunken Island, where we chased bluefish on the surface. The day ended with a few porgies for the dinner table. The trip was a gift from father to daughter as she gets ready to head to her new life as a married woman–in two weeks.
And on Thursday we had another double header.
In the morning we left the dock at 5:30am with Wayne Heyland and his friend, Don O'Brien, both Greenwich residents. We immediately hit bluefish off the Islands, and then went bass hunting. The tally was seven stripers from 6-16 pounds as well as some large porgies. The scup and the keeper striper were divided between the two fishermen for their evening's dinner.
At 4pm we had aboard Robert Remin of White Plains and his son, Daniel–who works at the ESPN Sports Channel. It was a very productive four hours, with the Remins bringing in many striped bass, with the largest coming in at 16 pounds, and porgies ranging between 12″ and 14″. All of the bass were released, but you can see Daniel's fish-his first keeper striper–in our Photo Gallery Photo of the Week. Eight porgies, however, were taken home for their dinner table.

In the morning we sailed with Peter Horoszko and his daughter, Katya, of Darien–and his son, Jamie Horoszko of Newtown, along with Peter's parents, visiting from Ukraine–Lora and Vova Volkova, residents of Odessa. We did well–first catching some porgies around the Norwalk Islands–and then enjoying non-stop action at the Nissaquogue, catching bluefish and an occasional fluke-not to mention all the sea robins. Everyone had a great day.
Our afternoon fishermen were Miles Slater and his guest, Chris, a visitor from Frankfurt, Germany. After a slow start, we ran up to Southport, where we found bluefish on the surface. Everyone had fun bringing them in on bucktails-with seven short fluke as part of the catch. All the fish were released except for four blues, kept for dinner.
