Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report
On Thursday, June 23, we went out with Robert Remin of White Plains. He had great action with bluefish and 12 fluke, with three keepers, the largest weighing 5.5 pounds.
Saturday's trip was with Michael Senior of Wilton, along with his son-in-law and grandson of Westport, Dr. Andrew Parker and his 10-year-old son, Ethan. Everyone enjoyed a catch that included fluke and bluefish, and the highlight of the trip was Ethan bringing in a 30-pound striped bass off the Norwalk Islands.
We had perfect weather on Tuesday morning, and we left the marina at 7:00am with Chuck Fabso of Bridgeport, and his son, Greg; this was a bon voyage trip for Greg who's moving to Ohio to start a new job. We began fishing for fluke–and boated a few–after which we switched our gear for bluefish. Working the shores along Southport we had blues hitting our lines nonstop. Close to 30 were caught, and all were released. As we were wrapping up to return to the dock, Chuck put some soft bait on his line, and he hooked into a schoolie striper.
On the morning of Wednesday, June 29, our passengers were Marc Dacey of New Canaan and his son, Michael, a NYC resident, and his daughter, Lizzie, visiting from Australia. We began the day with light tackle and had an early bite, with bluefish hitting our lines nonstop. The family wanted to try for some fluke, and nine were boated–with five keepers in the lot, up to 24". As the tide began to ebb, we finished off the day fishing for striped bass, and one keeper came in at 14 pounds. Lots of fillets were taken home for smoking and grilling.
My Bonnie regular, Robert Remin of White Plains NY, brought his eight-year-old nephew, Gideon Askowitz of Long Island, for a twilight trip on Wednesday evening. They boated nine fluke, with five keepers up to 22″.
We're a bit disappointed with the poor porgy showing thus far. Based on our annual records, they should be showing up in greater numbers in late June, and we're hoping things will improve over the next few weeks.
