Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

On Wednesday we hopped aboard Craig Steinberg's Boston Whaler to show him some fishing techniques and give him a few tips about fishing local waters. Craig is from Weston, and he brought along his son, Corey, and his daughter, Paige. The family had a wonderful day, tallying several bluefish and striped bass up to 37"--all caught on surface plugs.
Friday's trip was with "My Bonnie" regular, Marc Pfefferle, who was entertaining three clients of his Stamford firm, Carl Marks Associates. The party had to duck in from the rain a couple of times, but everyone caught fish--working off of the Norwalk Islands, bringing in bluefish on the surface, along with striped bass up to 30"--all on plugs and sand eel jigs.
Saturday morning we sailed at 7:30am with Mark Haas, a resident of Hartsdale NY, who brought along his son, Conner, and Conner's friends, Kevin Lee and Jacob Meyer--both from Scarsdale. After a fairly slow start we ended up at Southport, where we found bluefish on the surface, and the boys got several blues 5-6 pounds--some on plugs and some on Slug-o lures.
Sunday's trip was with Doug Cullen of Weston, entertaining his father, Harry--who lives in upstate New York--and Jim Merchie of Westport--all good fishermen. However, it was another slow day, but they brought in a few striped bass, with one keeper in the mix.
The large stripers seem to be mostly hitting just after dawn, and they don't stay too long in one spot. But conditions can change overnight, and as every angler knows, fishing is not a science.
