Norwalk Islands - Saltwater Fishing Report

We sailed in the early afternoon on Friday with Brian Anderson of Stamford, who was entertaining two colleagues—Dan Kinsbourne of Ridgefield CT and Mike Coughlin from the Garden State. It was a rough day on the water, but we were able to jig up some large blues and a few striped bass. One of the passengers was feeling seasick after 2.5 hours of fishing mid-Sound and getting rocked about by 3-4 foot waves, so we moved closer to shore, where conditions were much calmer, and we ended the trip catching some more blues and porgies.
On Saturday we left the dock at 8:00am with New Canaanites, Chuck Frydenborg and his 10-year-old son, Christopher–a very enthusiastic young fisherman. We began the trip close to shore, using tube & worm for striped bass, but had no hook-ups. We then moved to the middle of the Sound, trying to get there before heavy winds came through, and we jigged up bluefish up to 10 pounds. Our next stop was a search for porgies and blackfish, and we found steady action catching these plus some sea bass; all were undersized, so we moved closer to shore, where we got into keeper porgies up to 14″, keeping eight for the table.
Sunday's trip began at 1:30pm with Michael Silvestri of Redding, who brought along his children: Amanda, Jake and J.C. The weather was cool and crisp-–no rain, but lots of wind. We started out jigging in deep water, with little success. We then moved to another area and changed our tackle and techniques-–and being rewarded with a mess of porgies up to 15″, some sea bass and a few blackfish–most of which were returned to the water. Before returning home the family wanted to try jigging again in the middle of the Sound, but we soon had to come in because of a case of mal de mer. It's been a rough few days with constant wind and several strong gusts that made for a difficult situation for some passengers.
