Golfito's"Second Season" Not Far Off

Capt. Bob Baker
March 28, 2008
Golfito - Saltwater Fishing Report

Angling success has gone from very low, to more billfish than you can believe existed, and back to S.L.O.W.

We had hot, hot surface temps in most all of February. Bad fishing.

Then, as the season wound down, and anglers left , many disappointed, the billfish came up to the top with a vengeance. Captains reported seeing as many as 300 sails on top, finning in groups of 2,3,6. All over the surface.

The reason? Some cooling rains and a shift in the Humbolt , or equatorial, Current, cooled things down and the billfish, mostly sailfish, rode the bait-filled blue water in close to shore and provided action that billfishermen only dream of.

Just as I started to spread that gospel to my client list, things went south.

We now have a rigid thermocline established close to the surface, and, though bigger, hardier species like sails, marlin, even big yellowfin, can cross that boundary without harm, the smaller, weaker baitfish can't.

So, we'll wait for things to even out , again. We can only hope that our "Little Summer" marlin season proves once again to be a fantastic fishing experience.

As I've said many times before, there are more marlin, big marlin- little marlin, present here off Golfito during the last 2-3 weeks of August and the month of September, than in all the months of Dec. -March, the so-called " Prime Season".

If you have not had luck in fighting and releasing that marlin trophy of a lifetime, this coming window is the time to do it.

Just before this last change in water temps we had a day to remember inshore as well. Started out with 3 nice snapper and two huge jack crevalle in 125ft.(live sardines) Then , as the tide changed to in-coming, we moved to our special "Corvina Hole", and had a day to remember on screaming corvinas , all in the 20-30 lb. class. Just in time for Lent.

Now, reports I got as recently as 2 days ago say that even the inshore angling for roosterfish, snapper, corvina , etc. has gone stone cold.

I'm heading an expedition tomorrow morning to see if things have changed.

I'll let you know how it comes out !
Good Fishing, Wherever You Are,
Capn Bob
