Anna Maria - Saltwater Fishing Report

Summer fishing has been steadily improving as the days begin to shorten. Redfish will be congregating to form big roaming schools. Look for them on the shallow bars on the outgoing tide or the oyster bars on high water. Excellent time to use artificial lures such gold spoons or soft plastic jigs. Trout fishing was excellent in the early mornings. Lots of big trout over the flats in Sarasota Bay. They have been following schools of small shiners in 4-6 feet. Snook fishing has been good with most of the action in the evening hours. Best areas are in Longboat Pass and bean point. Offshore grouper fishing has also been productive. Most hard bottom from 40 feet and beyond have been producing keeper gags and a mixed bag of mangrove snapper, key west grunts, and a few nice flounder. Spanish mackerel have been feeding well around all structure and reefs. There has also been some early kingfish in the same areas. Running chumlines of sardines will bring in the macks as well as bringing up some mangrove snapper from the bottom.
