December/January Fishing Report

Capt. Tom Chaya
January 6, 2012
Anna Maria - Saltwater Fishing Report

Great December/January weather has plenty of fish active over the flats throughout the bay. Redfish have been a good target from Miguel Bay to Sarasota bay. They are still schooling on the stronger tides resulting in good rallies of reds in all sizes. A few bull reds over 32 inches were hitting on suspended sardines. There is still plenty of shiners to fill our bait wells and should remain in the bay until we get the stronger cold fronts. Pompano showed in good numbers in the passes and on the edges of the sandbars. Docs goofy jigs and freelined live shrimp worked welll on these hard light tackle fighters. Trout have been scattered over grass in 4-6 feet. Lots of winter trout over 20 inches are in shallower water. Gulp jigs worked slowly are a great artificial alternative. We caught quite a few flounder around the bridge structure and over hard bottom in the gulf. Best flounder were in the 18-22 inch range. In the gulf grouper action was excellent. We landed a few keeper red grouper and released all gag grouper. Gag grouper is closed until further notice. Some hogfish also made it to the cooler in these areas. Tom Chaya
