September Peak Month for Schooling Reds

Capt. Tom Chaya
September 3, 2013
Anna Maria - Saltwater Fishing Report

September is usually a peak month for schooling reds. Reds are working around oyster bars and mangroves on high tides. Fish the edges of sandbars on the lower tides. Gold spoons and gulp jigs have been working well on reds. Snook are still mainly on the beaches and the passes from Longboat key to the south. Bucktail jigs fished in the beach swash provided good action. Trout have been active in the early mornings on the areas deeper grass. Top water plugs and and jigs have been working well in these areas. Spanish mackerel have invaded the gulf and bay reefs. Plenty of good sized macks are being caught in the 25-30 inch range. Mangrove snapper are in good numbers over most hard bottom in 40-60 feet. Grouper are eating a variety of baits over reefs and the bait shows offshore. Tom Chaya
