Pompano Make a Good Showing, Along with Blues and Mackerel
Pompano made a nice showing throughout are area. Dick McNabb and crew from Longboat Key jigged up a couple dozen using potgut jigs. Best numbers are around structure in all the passes and bridges on the top of the tide. These areas also produced lots of school sized blues and some large mackerel.
Moderating temperatures this season have snook on the shallow bays. We are catching snook in late spring time areas. Trout are abundant in Sarasota middle grounds using shiners and artificials. Howard and Grant Poole from Indiana had a good day on a mixed bag of pompano, redfish, trout, black drum and sheepshead.
Offshore there are nice mangrove snapper and spanish mackerel on the wrecks and reefs. Catch and release gag grouper are hitting in 30-50 feet. We managed to find a school of Big black drum near the skyway bridge and caught two in the 30 pound range. Bonnethead sharks are abundant on the beaches and edges of the bulkhead. I have moved my guide service to Mainsail Marina in Holmes beach.
