Miami, Flamingo and the Upper Keys

Capt. Raul Montoro
March 23, 2006
Biscayne Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

One of my favorite times of the year is spring time, especially for bone fishing. The water temperatures are warming up and the bonefish are starting to appear in big numbers. There have been many big fish being caught between ten and thirteen pounds in Biscayne Bay and the upper keys. This is the time of year where you have good shots at catching double digit fish through out the day. Permit are starting to show up as well, even though not in big numbers yet but almost every trip we’ve had shots at them.

Flamingo Florida Bay has been good with pretty much all types of species. We've been catching snook on the flats; you'll find them on the edges of the pot holes along with trout. Redfish have been schooling up on the flats in front of the park, the best way to find these fish is to pole and find them. I see many people using trolling motors in real shallow water trying to redfish and all this does is spook every fish around you. That technique works well when working deeper shorelines in search for snook and redfish, but for sight fishing the best way is to work a little, pole and be patient and you'll find them. Cobia has been good in the gulf wrecks along with mackerel and bluefish, and lots of triple tail along the whole gulf coast. My favorite bait for cobia is a live pinfish, when there not eating anything else a live pinfish usually does the trick.

If you want to experience some good bone fishing now is the time to catch that double digit fish, give Shallow Tails Charters a call and let’s go fishing...
