Is Too Much Baitfish Possible?

Capt. Van Hubbard
September 18, 2008
Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

9-18-08 fishing report by Captain Van Hubbard

Plenty of fish but action has been sporadic.

Baitfish minnows are everywhere and it can be tough to get gamefish to eat our baits. What a wonderful problem to enjoy; too much baitfish! Tuesday I went scouting and found fish everywhere. I saw the largest school of snook I have seen all year. We did not even bother em because I wanted to have them happy on Wednesday. The entire school just vanished; I looked around the last two days and con not find them.

We found a few redfish and came back to get a couple yesterday but only one today. Fish are moving. We did get a mess of trout and some snapper today, so Tom and Betty Jean Miller do have a nice dinner tonight. We saw lots of birds, manatees and dolphins to keep us busy.

I had a friend call to tell me he had found some kings and mackerel Sunday. We looked around and found plenty Tuesday and only a few Wednesday. I told a friend about em and he smoked the macks about five miles south of us while we worked for a few.

Charlotte Harbor and The Gulf Islands hosted our Florida Outdoor Writers Association last weekend. We had a hundred outdoor writers and fishing tackle reps tour and fish our area. Everyone had fun and some caught a few fish while getting acquainted with our area. Mark Sosin was our speaker on Wednesday evening and it was wonderful to hear the stories and he shared his experiences so generously. It was a opportunity to network and fellowship with other outdoor folks from

Bottom line is we have plenty of fish and they are hungry some of the time. I expect better action next week after this moon is darker. Water temps are down slightly and fish are in the area but can bet challenging with all the food available. When ever we do get some cooler water temps near eighty degrees, everything will bust lose because the urgency to fasten up for winter will turn on the bite. Get ready for some hot action when the first cold front comes thru here. Let's Go Fishin' soon. Captain Van Hubbard. www.captvan
