Boca Grande fishing charters August forecast

Capt. Danny Latham
August 3, 2012
Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

August brings the heat and great fishing! Despite the warm temperatures the fishing here in Southwest Florida has been outstanding the past few weeks. Snook and reds continue to feed consistently and the tarpon fishing has been exceptional.

The Boca Grande tarpon fishing has been very good lately. After this years annual spawn a ton of fish stayed here in Charlotte Harbor to fatten up after their exhausting mating ritual. I have been averaging 2-4 tarpon a trip coming in to August and they have been averaging around 100lbs with an occasional 150lb plus. They have been hitting using multiple techniques. Live bait, dead bait and artificial are all producing fish. If you are interested in catching some tarpon consider fishing from now until mid October. The tarpon fishing will remain consistent until the water temperatures drop following our first few major cold fronts.

Snook fishing has been fantastic this summer and August is one of my favorite months. Snook are piled in and around the many passes around Southwest Florida as they prepare for their annual spawn. 20-50 fish days have been the norm with most of the fish averaging 22"-24". Even though the average fish is around 4-5 pounds many trips have produced fish well over the 15lb.mark. I can't guarantee a giant Snook but the chances are pretty high!

Redfish have started to be pretty cooperative. This time of year we have higher tides which allows many of our redfish to forage in and around the multiple mangrove islands and shorelines. The shade produced by the overhanging trees provides great cover and cooler water temperatures. Fishing around these trees is a blast! If you have never played tug-o-war with a redfish that is trying his best to break you off, you're missing some great fun! Getting hung up in the trees is part of it and it makes every landed fish that more special.

The nearshore fishing has been okay as well. There have been lots of Spanish mackerel and Bonita, which is always fun and makes great bait for big Goliath grouper. A few Cobia have been around and I have been catching a few nice Gags as well.

Whether you want to catch the fish of a lifetime or just relax with friends, you can count on Reelfishing charters to put together the ultimate Southwest Florida experience! Capt. Danny is the guide that will bring everything together for a fun, exciting fishing charter that you'll remember.
