Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

6/26/16
Today's trip involved my 7yr old and 10 yr old grandsons. We were on the water by 0630 and headed just past Devil Fish key for bait. The bait was lined up on top for about 100 yards in about 18" of water. We chummed a little and had plenty of bait for the day. On our first stop, the 7yr old said he did not want to fish. We caught a few fish while he played with the bait. Our next stop produced a nice flounder, two keeper snapper and Spanish mackerel. The little one got interested and was hooked for the rest of the day.

The third stop was a large grass flat with no moving water. We caught trout to about 12" long. One trout that was reeled in by the little one produced a rather large rat's nest with another rod.

On the next stop, they caught mangrove snapper and jack crevalle. The two are in the CCAFL STAR tournament and every fish caught would be entered in one of many categories. The 10 yr old is currently in first place Cobia for the state of Florida.

On our next stop we would target Snook and trout. The 10 yr old caught a 21.5" snook. I put a 26.5 snook in the boat. We moved a short distance and the 10 yr old put an 18" trout in the boat. We caught several trout and missed some very large fish that blow up on the top at the green backs.
It was time to move to the reef to target cobia and grouper. The first to hook up was the 7yr old with a blistering run by a 23" gag grouper.

His next fish was a goliath grouper. He fought it for about 10 minutes. The rod was in the rod holder for about 8 minutes while the goliath was stuck in the structure. After a tug of war it popped out and showed itself. It measured 40" long.

Not a bad size for a 7yr old.
