Giant triple tail-Boca Grande-Charlotte Co.

Capt. Darel Carter
July 2, 2015
Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

Saturday June 26th

Our target for today was triple tail (Lobotes Surinamensis) aka flasher or steamboat. What? Anyway, I bought four dozen large shrimp and met my good friend Joe at the boat ramp early. Our first stop we free lined shrimp to our target and Joe hooked up on the second cast. Joe had a 16" triple tail in the boat at 0630 hours.

I hooked up with a 20" triple tail on the next spot. The next two spots produced no hook ups. Joe hooked up with an 18" triple tail as we moved from spot to spot on a live shrimp. We moved on and changed to using a cork for a different tactic. I caught a Shorty and Joe caught another 18" triple tail that was rapped around some structure. I had to use some boat skills to get that one unhooked as I instructed Joe to free line and open the bail of his reel.

At the next spot, I cast the shrimp, while under a cork to the target area and hook up. I saw a massive flash (Flasher) and waited for the cork to move. I set the hook and this big fat slob of a triple tail rolled just under the water. As I reeled this big hog in it just rolled around as if he was not hooked. He made a few runs but did not pull as much as the smaller ones. He measured 27.5" and 16.5lbs. We had two of the fish blow up on our corks and leave teeth marks.
