Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

11-12-08 web report

Fishing and weather have been so good I forgot to get out a report; sorry.

We have enjoyed some quality fishing and mostly great weather. The water is cooling down with some cooler nights and was right at seventy degrees the last two days. I know there are snook and reds around but we have concentrated on kingfish and pompano recently. Baitfish are abundant still and winds have been mostly northeast and breezy. It's impossible to guess how long this will last so we are enjoying every day we can.

Let's see on the Third we caught a mess of pompano and permit in two feet of water. We could actually see most of the fish flash as they reacted to our hook set. Both species of fish averaged about two pounds with a few up to three pounds. No more bonefish since the colder water temps. I have seen several tarpon but no hook ups. I saw a seventy to eighty pound tarpon cruise the flat by us today.

I took Election Day to do errands and fished kings the Fifth and Sixth; we did well both days in about forty feet on live minnows. Most fish were small, five to twelve pounds, but fun on light tackle. Fish were scatted and we had to trool spoons to locate fish then anchor up and chum. When the frozen chum ran out the fish dispersed. Friday the seventh we chased pompano and did well. Fish were bunched up and we would get several then move to relocate fish and repeat. Doc' Goofy Jigs and pompano jigs produced fish.

Ward Curtis and cousin, Ray fished Monday and we had to work at it to get three fat pompano for dinner. We saw reds that refused to play with us and caught at least a dozen species on jigs pursuing the pompano. We had fun and they took home a great dinner. We stopped by the Island Court retail outlet on Englewood Beach and grabbed three pounds of large stone crab claws for their appetizers. It's great to have such convent water front opportunities to add groceries as desired.

Today we landed seven or eight nice choice pompano and we'll eat well tonight. Life is not easy but great. Mornings have been chilly but afternoons are awesome. Fish and weather are cooperative most days; what more can a man ask for? Let's Go Fishin' soon. Captain Van Hubbard.
