Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

Today was challenging but also rewarding.

Dr. John and his brother-in-law, John were my guests today. I picked em up at Palm Island Resort as the fog lifted at eight thirty AM. The morning was beautiful; a slight breeze from the north so we choose a shoreline we could pole down and try for some redfish. We saw a few spook and blow up as we worked the shallow grass for the first hundred yards and Dr. John missed a bump before hooking up solid on a nice redfish. He though it was only a small one as it ran him around the boat before I put it in the net. We decided it was bigger than he first thought as it was twenty-eight and a half inches long. It grabbed and ate a gold Bagley rattle spoon. We found more fish and even saw several tail as we tossed em spoons. Since they had stopped to feed we tried some live shrimp but just could not coax any more takers. We cast to the deeper water for trout but only found catfish so we moved.

We looked for trout and found a few ladyfish and not many hungry fish for the next few stops. I found several permit but could not get em to eat or shrimp either. We finally tried a creek for our finally and got some ladyfish and snapper to bend our poles. Dr. John hooked a big snook on a small ladyfish he was reeling up but it spit the hook after a couple of minutes. We stopped at a small wreak to try for a grouper for dinner but found only more snapper. John took Dr. John to school on this bite and we had fun before calling it a day. Great weather, a great day, we saw eagles, dolphins and we exercised the fish so they will be ready for the next time. They water has warmed up to almost seventy degrees inside but still cold outside our fish should turn on any time. That cold spell last week set em back but they have to eat soon. Migratory mackerel are due around this next moon so look forward to more action. Snook opens the First of next month! Our fishing forecast is much bright.
