Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor

Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

Let's Go Fishin'

Web 8-20-06

Fishing has some hot spots.

It was slower this week but we had a great trip Friday with Tim, Sue and Mike McLees from central Florida. They came over to try out some Gulf coast fishing. We had held off till late in the week because we had some minor fish kills on Tuesday. We did see a few old dead fish on our travels but no problem for us.

We ran down to Charlotte Harbor and got into a red hot redfish bite. It was as good as it gets. We hooked up immediately on our first cast and had bites ever cast for over and hour. I was whipped on the first stop. We ended with a triple header and left em biting. It’s been to long since we had this steady action. This is the time of year for schools of reds. They have just been hard to get with. We had to forget about using popping corks because the fish just chewed them up as fast as I could but one on. They even continued to chew em up and spit em back out as we laughed at the crazy reds. They were mostly slot fish with a few over sized bulls.

We decided to try some tarpon. One of the other captains had seen several a caught one down by Boca Grande. They were using DOA “baitbusters”, but we caught some large live threadfins. We patiently searched and got teased for hours. The fish were there and one or two would roll up to let us get a peak, just no takers. We even saw some nice schools in the early afternoon. We know the fish are still in the area just not always cooperative.

We found a few trout and snook on Saturday. Nothing like we are used to this time of the year but better than last week. No new dead fish right now. It’s impossible to predict what red tide will do but right now fishing is fine. We even a few very hot bright red spots. We’ll see what the new week brings. Captain Van Hubbard
