Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor

Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

Red Hot tarpon action. NOW!

6-20-07

We enjoyed wonderful tarpon fishing this past week.

We have hooked several fish every trip and landed many. Darin Silbaugh and his dad came down from the North Country to try some tarpon. They had fished with me several years ago. Darin and I went to school at Memphis Naval training Station at the same time in 1967. We had a wonderful day Friday and his dad landed a nice hundred pound tarpon. Darin had a couple of consecutive bites but could not get a solid hook up. They are excited about coming back next year.

Saturday Merry and I took her nephews for a boat ride and let them see some tarpon. They are not big enough yet but will be soon.

Sunday Scott Blanchard joined me. He flew in from Dallas for a contractor’s exam and wanted to try tarpon. We got a nice fish and shot some photos. Then the boats got all over and we came in early.

Steve Wofford and son David drove in from Tallahassee for some snook fishing. They had the trip of a lifetime. We caught several nice fish in the 30 inch class and a bunch of smaller ones. So far the dolphins have left us alone. They even got some redfish for dinner. The day was awesome and they said they talked all the way home about it.

Steve Cureton and his 12 year old son Conner joined me Tuesday. We got an early start after I caught a few minnows for bait. We caught a few snook and a redfish before my cell phone rang calling us out side for a hot tarpon bite. We found a happy bunch of milling silver kings and cast our frisky crabs to them. Conner hooked a nice fish and it went ballistic. After several jumps it broke off. I think it wrapped up in the line as it twisted in the air. A few minutes later he hooked a hundred pounder and brought it up to the leader for a catch. As it was still to frisky to pose we let Dad help wear her down until she was more cooperative. Then Conner brought her boat side for photos. Steve got a fish next and we decided to try a few more snook before the rains got us. This was the trip of a lifetime with memories that will be cherished forever for all of us. See photos on photo pages.

I cruised down to Captiva today to take a friend and his grandchildren for a day on the water. We found some trout for their dinner. We also observed some dolphin and manatees. A beautiful day and I even caught a pompano for my dinner on the way home.

It’s past my bedtime. Let’s go Fishin’ soon. Captain Van Hubbard
