Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor

Capt. Van Hubbard
August 7, 2007
Boca Grande - Saltwater Fishing Report

Still time to enjoy some good fishing before the kids go back to school.

Fishing has slowed down but available if you work around the heat.

It was great to get into that red hot tarpon bite on the last moon. We should have some left but I have not ridden down to look. Snook fishing is ok and the season opens next month. Reds are ready but not as thick as we are used to around here. Trout are fine and we have a few nice snapper to make sure we can catch dinner. Some macks are around when the west winds let us get out and play with em. This is a good time to slip out for an AM trip and be home for lunch before it gets hot.

We had a fair day last Monday but the rains kept us close to home. Lot’s of minnows even though they are still growing. We found a few nice trout, snapper, and reds but could not get the snook to play. Stronger tides help the snook bite. The action was slower than normal but quality fish for our effort. The clouds kept things cooler and that was great.

Friday, I helped Captain Ron with his fishing camp class. He needed boats to take his class fishing. His kids were great; well on their way, learning about fishing. It was wonderful to share the time with these eager kids. They started off with a snook and snapper. It got crazy when the 11 inch snapper was gobbled up boat side but a huge snook. She ran off a quick hundred yards of 14 pound FireLine before she came to the surface and threw the snapper back at us. Everyone was pumped up and then that bite shut down. Go figure, start out and shut off so quickly. We moved around and tried up into Lemon Bay, by Captain Ron and caught a red, several nice trout and some strong catfish. It was wonderful to share the morning with these well behaved kids.

Of course it’s hot in Southwest Florida in August but we do have windows we can slip out and enjoy some good fishing. We still have a shot at tarpon, maybe even a hot bite, like the last moon. This is the time of year I’m glad I have that big blue T Top, Omni Marine built for me. Shade helps us avoid more sun.

Let’s Go Fishin’ soon. Captain Van Hubbard.
