Cape Coral - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fabulous Fishing. Folks, The Bite is ON!
Three trips this past week and the fishing has really been good each trip. It's been raining late in the afternoon, so it's not been a factor for the morning trips. The water contrasts colors of clear to blue as the tide line is visible carrying grass to mark it.
Tons of Sand Trout are 6' deep on the sand bar break at Guitar Fish Shoal across the channel from the main Cayo Costa Ranger Station entrance. 5' with 4' leader under a Poppin cork 3/8ths chartreuse jig baited with live shrimp. There is no minimum size limit, keep up to 100 pounds. They are fairly small but they taste like Angel food.
Small Gray Snapper against the Mangrove overhang branches with some nice size ones in the Boca channel N. side 250 yards out from the caissons at the 39 to 41 foot depth level. Soft corals appear to be growing there as we brought some up are the probable reason for the nice Snappers there.
Speckled Sea Trout were many on the grass flat edges at 5' as usual and some of exceptional size. The FWC reg C&R till 2021 is producing larger fish. 4' leader under a Poppin cork 3/8ths chartreuse jig baited with live shrimp kills produces continuous bites. Usually 80 to 100 C&R per trip.
The ladyfish have been prolific just about everywhere, some are absolutely huge and a hand full at that. Some clients complaining of their wrists hurting after extended battles. Poor Babies.
Tarpon are scattered. The Pass is packed as usual with minimal catches for all the hype. Some a rolling on the Hill and a few have been caught off the Cayo beaches and around the bend at Pejuan Point.
FYI: D&D bait, Matlacha is bring in shrimp from Tampa. They are twice the size of the Charlotte Harbor catch.
The Atlantic Sharp Nose sharks are averaging around 3.5 to 4.5 feet per catch, usually three per day on live pinfish under a bobber on a 3' steel leader, 7/0 Gamakatsu Circle hook. I use them because they hold well in the fight but release easily preventing damage and further stress to these magnificent creatures. Find them on the channel breaks just off the main intercoastal grass flats.
Our average catch each trip was around 100 fish per day with Two absolutely, HUGE ( as Billy would say) Speckled trout. Oh, yes, two or three very nice Mackerel each trip, almost forgot.
We had one hit this week that smoked the 5000 PENN reel, striped 250 yards of 40-pound Power Pro braid and kept on going. It looked like a souped up Spinner shark to me. Tough on equipment but exciting and WAY TOOO much fun.
Mutton and American Red Snapper offshore 100' and deeper to 200'. The deeper the better and the season is on Folks. Hire a guide and do not miss out. I saw one Red Snapper that weighed 27 pounds. Great eating and incredible experience. Dude, I'm in!
