I've been taking a few trips to the backcountry this week kayaking with good results.
4 people yesterday caught and released aprox. 20plus snook,2 slot reds and loads of trout.
This didn't make a few guides to happy to see other people fishing,(expecially Kayaking) in what they think is their area ,but no one had any bad words thank god.
Our area is so diversed that if you know where the snook are, a good kayak fisherman will find them as well as a good guide.
We had 2 fish in the 20 plus pound range put a spanking on 2 of my anglers.
1 a woman who has been fishing all her life, had a chance of a lifetime with 1 of these snook.
She threw a doa bait buster under a mangrove, and 1 jerk later WHAM!.She threw her anchor, but their was just no way to stop this big fish from pulling her into the mangroves.
She manageg to get her out a bit, but finally back into the mangroves she went,the snook made a dash around the boat and the power-pro wrapped around the kayak and the fish was lying right next to the boat,she tried to lip it, but this fish was just still too green, and poped her 40 pound leader.She said that was the biggest snook she had ever seen.I've personally seen snook that looked 50 pounds, but have never caught one.
Her eyes looked like silver dollors as she was paddling up to me,talk about exciting,it was some fight.
The other big snook took a 1/8 oz waited jerk bait,the problem being, the hook size was just a #2 and when this big girl started to shake her head up top the water, the hook finally pulled out.He should have been using at least a #4 offset.
It was great seeing those big fish again shaking their heads trying too get away.
They were way too large to come out of the water.
So get out their, get fishing, and you just might be the 1 who catches that 20 to 30 pound snook.
