Summertime in the Florida Everglades

Capt. Herb Kehoe
August 30, 2011
Chokoloskee - Saltwater Fishing Report

With the water temperature in the mid to high eighties and the air temps in the nineties, fishing continues to be good in the Everglades.

Fishing to the south, from Lostmans River to the Harney River continues to be good. We are finding a lot of snook around the mouth of the rivers in the eighteen to thirty five inch range and numerous redfish along the beaches. Once you find the reds, it is not uncommon to catch ten to twenty fish. Most of these fish are less than eighteen inches, but if you stay with the schools, you will get a couple of keepers.

Offshore, the sharks are still bad; however we did land a nice Cobia out there this past week. We are also seeing a few schools of Tarpon along the edges of the tidal rips. These fish are moving fast, but if you get a bait far enough in front of them, they will eat.

Fishing should improve in September. The Redfish bite should get better and the fish will be larger. Tarpon fishing can be great in the rivers as these fish move in and out with the tide.

So, if you are looking for some action, come on down to the Everglades and lets go fishing.
