Calm Seas and Full Boxes

Capt. Larry Pentel
June 22, 2014
Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

Whew, I have been running hard this past week taking advantage of calm seas and beautiful beach weather. I have run 2 trips a day for the past 8 days and my anglers have all had a blast with great catches even on the short trips. Red Snapper have been the primary target with a King or 3 added on most trips. There have been quite a few Atlantic Sharpnose sharks around ( a smaller, good tasting shark), some Scamps,a few Amberines ( lesser jacks), Red Grouper and I even had a fellow catch a legal cobia on a 2 hr trip yesterday. This time of year you never really know what kind of bonus fish you are going to encounter.

June is is my "regular" month with some of these families having fished with me 12 to 15 years the same week every year and I have got to watch thier kids grow up and some of 'em even start bringing their own kids fishing. One of the benefits about the job I guess.... plus, these folks know the drill and we don't have to have near as much "fishing school" !

Here are a few pics from the past week:

I have watched these boys grow into men...and pretty good fishermen. A great catch on a morning 4 hr.

These kids have a blast fishing with dad. He keeps it to 2 hr with the kids to keep 'em into it.

With 5 gals you expect a great catch of Snappers !

The rest of the catch was pretty nice too

These 4 gals were experienced fisherfolk but had never been of the beach before. They promised they would be back !

While we have had a limit of Red Snapper every trip ( with some big 'uns some days)the bite really hasn't been hot. Lot's of "nibbles" and short strikes with live baits often just getting grabbed and spit out. I have been having to change up baits a lot and try to figure out just what works best on any spot. Luckily we have lots of spots and lots of fish !

More Fishing Reports:

Gulf Fishing off Grayton Beach in beautiful South Walton. Red Snapper to Cobia to King Mackeral to Grouper. No need to get up early or drive for an hour to a marina. We will pick you up on the beach and be on a reef or wreck in usually less than 15 minutes. Some of the Gulfs best fishing lies just offshore of the snow white sands of South Walton. We also offer Tarpon trips at Indian Pass during the summer run. July and August have large schools of giant Silver Kings feeding just off the beach.
