Groupers and More Groupers

Capt. Larry Pentel

Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

If the weather hadn't been so nice the past week you would swear a Hurricane had come through to move all these Groupers in that are on the beach. Most are gags (that fish that NOAA says is almost extinct and has shut us down to a 2 month season in the fall) but there are quite a few Reds around as well. 'Course, these are the same folks who say there very few Red Snappers too---

Lots of these around- I wonder if the folks at National Marine Fisheries have ever been on the water?

A fine Red Grouper Along with a Bunch of Other Critters.

The Kings have been few and far between the past 10 days or so. Even so we still manage to luck into one or two every now and then.

The King on the end weighed 35#

The gals almost always outfish the Guys, twice this week I have had a gal catch the biggest Red Grouper of the day on a 2 hook rig, along with most of the "other" fish fry material in the box.

We have had good luck even on the short trips. Yesterday afternoon I ran a little 3 hr on a slick Gulf that let me run anywhere I wanted. Along with a bunch of BIG fish we had to release and a lot of missed Grouper bites my folks got these nice groupers and a pile of Triggers.

More happy anglers with a great catch.

Ten more days and we get to keep some of these huge Red Snappers we have been steady throwing back. I never would have thought I'd hear myself saying-- "Rats, another 15# Snapper". I look forward to some "easy" boxes of big fish and some great ceviche' June 1st !

More Fishing Reports:

Gulf Fishing off Grayton Beach in beautiful South Walton. Red Snapper to Cobia to King Mackeral to Grouper. No need to get up early or drive for an hour to a marina. We will pick you up on the beach and be on a reef or wreck in usually less than 15 minutes. Some of the Gulfs best fishing lies just offshore of the snow white sands of South Walton. We also offer Tarpon trips at Indian Pass during the summer run. July and August have large schools of giant Silver Kings feeding just off the beach.
