Report for Destin, Florida - Nearshore

Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

Man is it hot! The temperature and the fishing have kept a steady pace with each other this summer. My folks today had sweat pouring of their foreheads by 10 AM today but they had good reason. The snappers and the kings bit good but the amberjacks were on the warpath today. Three times we had a good bite of fish going only to be hammered by the jacks. Once they turn on it's about impossible to get a bait thru 'em to anything else. With the limit at 28 inches to the fork and only 1 per person you don't want to stay on them for long!

Yesterday I had a boat full of locals who didn't care about anything but snappers. Not a problem, I started hitting snapper spots and we had a pretty good box going 2 hrs. into a four hour when one of my "snapper" spots suddenly changed hands. We had 7 groupers on in probably 10 minutes but only managed to put one ( fine one) in the boat. We were geared for 5# bites with 3/0 reels and 30# leaders, these full sized grouper gave my folks a lesson in reef structure pretty quickly. We did get a back handed complement from an unusual source towards the end of the trip tho-. I stopped on a little spot 'bout a mile from the truck to finish off our Snapper limit when the Marine Patrol whips up alongside. They asked me to open the cooler and I said sure, we can count fish. They allowed that wasn't needed, just open the cooler. I obliged and they changed their tune. Said they hadn't expected to see so many fish and could I please count the snapper out for them. We were still 2 short of our 24 limit so I wasn't worried, just felt good.

The kings are still here and biting ( somewhere) real good every day. I've been lucky and been in the right place when my folks have wanted kings. Took teenage boys the other day and dad asked me to catch 'em some " big fish". A squal came up and drove us in after 2 hours and we only had 4 fish, they weighed a little over 100# total tho and everybody was REAL happy.

Today was my last day running out of Grayton Beach for 3 weeks. I'm going over to Indian Pass tomorrow to Tarpon fish for a while. I can't wait. Beach launch fishing is exiting but it's hard to compare with 200# fish ( that JUMP) on 30# spinning gear. Stay tuned , I'll borrow someones computer over there and send a report in a week or two.

Houston, we have ignition, that silver rocket just launched on the port rod-------

More Fishing Reports:

Gulf Fishing off Grayton Beach in beautiful South Walton. Red Snapper to Cobia to King Mackeral to Grouper. No need to get up early or drive for an hour to a marina. We will pick you up on the beach and be on a reef or wreck in usually less than 15 minutes. Some of the Gulfs best fishing lies just offshore of the snow white sands of South Walton. We also offer Tarpon trips at Indian Pass during the summer run. July and August have large schools of giant Silver Kings feeding just off the beach.
