Report for Destin, Florida - Nearshore

Capt. Larry Pentel
November 3, 2003
Destin - Saltwater Fishing Report

Snapper season has ended for '03 and we went out with great limit of fine fish on the last day. If 2004 is near as good as this past year it will be a fine one.

Still lots of fish to catch without having to harrass the snappers. This morning I ran a half day and we had a limit of kings in an hour and 10 minutes-we probably missed twice as many. They were skyrocketing on the short baits with great abandon but missing the hooks ( a lot). Probably a good thing as we got to fish for'em that much longer. Went out a little further and added 4 amberines, a black snapper (not closed) ans a few trigs to the box.

Yesterday we ran a little longer trip and had a limit of amberines, 3 grouper, 2 black snapper and some trigs. We broke off some Big groupers that couldn't be stopped even with 80# tackle. I talked to the folks again today and was told that they couldn't believe anything could pull as hard as an amberine.

A lot of folks seem to give up on gulf fishin' when snappers close. No need to- there aren't near as many boats out, the groupers usually start biting a little better as the water cools and the triggers get thick. Nothing better to stock up the freezer for winter with than a pile of trig fillets.

The pompano have showed a little the past few days-still no big run tho. Lots of small sharks on the beach, great fun to sight fish with light tackle. Some bull reds have been running the beach also.

More Fishing Reports:

Gulf Fishing off Grayton Beach in beautiful South Walton. Red Snapper to Cobia to King Mackeral to Grouper. No need to get up early or drive for an hour to a marina. We will pick you up on the beach and be on a reef or wreck in usually less than 15 minutes. Some of the Gulfs best fishing lies just offshore of the snow white sands of South Walton. We also offer Tarpon trips at Indian Pass during the summer run. July and August have large schools of giant Silver Kings feeding just off the beach.
